Adobe Illustrator allows artists to create illustrations on a computer platform that interfaces with the other products of the Adobe Creative Suites system. Illustrator allows the user to work with a wide variety of file types to create images used in advertising, artistic displays or publications. The software is based on vector graphics, a system that uses mathematic representations to define the lines and shading of an image, rather than photographic image files.

Adobe Illustrator History

Adobe Illustrator has been around since 1986 when it was introduced as a software package meant for font development. It was initially only available computers using the Apple operating system.

How to Use Illustrator

A graphic artist working with Illustrator may start with a photograph, drawing or clip art. Using Illustrator the artist can manipulate the image by changing colors, adding text, drawing lines and creating repetitive patterns. Artists commonly use the layers function to keep the elements of the image separate for easy editing. Resize the image to fit its use. Enlarge the image to fit a billboard or shrink it down for use on a business card or a smart phone screen. Save the image in the best file format for its use. Images prepared with the software are often used in print or online advertisements as well as illustrations used with articles.

Illustrator Users

Graphic artists, illustrators and designers often use the software to produce images that include elements that are not part of a photograph. This can include line drawings, shapes, text, patterns and other image elements. The most recent versions of Illustrator include creating images for the web and the smaller screens of tablets and mobile phones. Video production special effects can also be created using Illustrator.
